While bathrooms are one of the most expensive rooms to renovate, giving the space a lift doesn’t have to cost a fortune. By adding (or removing) small details, you can give your bathroom a luxe upgrade, no demolition required!

If there’s one interior designer in Canberra who has an aesthetic we relate to, it’s Maria Cerne, from Studio Black Interiors. (Check out her insta feed: we dare you not to fall in love.) So we asked her advice on how to give your bathroom a quick, chic makeover.

“Small spaces can have a great impact, if you know some tricks of the trade,” she tells us.

Below are Maria’s incredibly do-able design ideas below, as well as some lust-worthy images to add to your inspo board. And get started on your upgrade this weekend!

Use your mirror wisely

“Mirrors are a great way to make a space look larger, bounce light around, as well as add detail to your bathroom. I love using round or oval mirrors because they bring a lovely, organic feel to a space, and break up the hard finishes of tiles and tapware.

“Because the mirror doesn’t take up the whole wall, it allows the tile behind the mirror to be a feature, just like in this little powder room, which is only 900mm wide.”

Bring the outdoors in

“An inexpensive way to add tropical luxe to your bathroom, is to add greenery. Hanging ferns, succulents in a little glass vase, or a few twigs of eucalyptus leaves, bring the outdoors in. If you have a shelf, think about adding a smaller plant with cascading leaves.”

A place to sit

“I love using timber stools in bathrooms. They’re not only functional and provide a place to sit if the kids are in the bath, but can also be used to rest a glass of wine, a candle, or to style a little vignette of your favourite bath products. Timber is a fabulous way to add warmth to a bathroom, which is often full of hard, cold surfaces.”

Monochrome detailing

“A simple thing, like upgrading your tapware, can make a big difference to how your bathroom looks. I am especially fond of matte black tapware, which can instantly bring an extra level of sophistication to a space. Meir Australia and Phoenix Tapware, have very modern, affordable ranges of matte black tapware and accessories.”

Add some colour

“Bring texture and softness into your bathroom with luxurious towels and bathmats. Towels are a great way to add instant colour and vibrancy to your bathroom, too. Look for interesting patterns and textures.”
