It’s that time of the year when I start to pack away my cute summer dresses and sandals and replace them with woolly coats and leather boots. Although I might not like the chilly wind and cloudy days in Canberra, I like to remind myself of why I like the colder months – winter fashion! I love a statement coats or jackets, and boy is there a great range available for this season.

If you’re like me, you don’t want to invest a small fortune in a coat when there are plenty of budget-friendly options that are comfortable, stylish and warm. I’m all for shopping good-quality items but they have to be affordable, too. I’m loving some of the new season changes to the classic winter coats, and the styles on offer from great Aussie brands.

My mum and I are both looking to buy a great winter coat before the chill factor kicks in, and these are some of the ones I’m looking at…

The Classic Puffa

This cold weather staple has such a bad rep, but with so many cute options available why wouldn’t you want to wear one? They’ve been re-invented in the past couple of years, and one of my personal favourites is this one. The neutral shade is everywhere at the moment, and a nice change up from the usual monochrome, plus the price point is so affordable.

Puffer Jacket, $79.95

A Houndstooth Coat

Different patterns flow in and out of trend, but the classic houndstooth (much like it’s distant cousin leopard print) will always be in fashion. Pair it with your black work pants or stockings and a dress for a night out with the girls. It’s versatile and timeless.

Atmos & Here Bonnie Houndstooth Coat, $159.99

The Teddy Coat

This one’s a new addition to my Must-Have Coat List thanks to its surge in popularity over the last couple of years. It’s cute and comfy, and easy to style with a pair of jeans and white sneakers. Perfect for a girl-next-door look.

BB Dakota Yeti-To-Wear Coat, $143.20

An Oversized Wool Coat

Another timeless classic, this style is flattering on most body shapes and will keep you super warm on the way to and from work. It looks classy (and expensive) but this one is an absolute steal!

Oversize Wool Coat, $149.95

The Faux Fur Jacket

A staple in any fashion girl’s wardrobe, a faux fur jacket can be dressed down for brunch on a Sunday morning with jeans and your comfiest pair of winter boots, or thrown over the top of a slinky midi dress for date night. This one’s stylish and affordable: win-win!

Montana Faux Fur Jacket, $149.95

The Everyday Utility Coat

This one’s perfect for running errands, running between meetings or just having a leisurely stroll through the shops in your spare time between appointments. Layer it over a dress for autumn, and over a fine-wool knit for when it gets cooler.

The Everyday Cotton Utility Jacket, $179.95

A (Faux) Leather Jacket

You can’t put together a winter wardrobe without including a leather jacket. It’s another timeless piece that’ll last you ’til the end of time, and one that’s easily styled for just about any occasion. While a real one would be a huge investment (but probably worth it…), there are loads of faux leather options to choose from that won’t break the bank.

ASOS Design Curve Ultimate Biker Jacket, $59.50

The Classic Trench Coat

Last but certainly not least, a classic trench with a waist tie and sitting at the correct length will flatter any body shape. It’s an iconic coat that will certainly stand the test of time.

Perfect Stranger Trench, $120
