As the weather warms up (and so does your skin), keeping blemishes hidden can seem an impossible task. But it doesn’t have to be. We’ve found 6 good-quality, super-effective concealers that stay in place no matter what the temperature.

But first, a few inside tricks to complexion perfection…

Prepare: Would you style your hair without preparing it first? No. Same goes for your skin. Use a primer to ready your skin: it absorbs excess oils, creates a smooth working area by minimising the appearance of pores and helps hold your concealer (and foundation) in place for longer.

Foundation first: Yep, you read that right. Apply your foundation first, then your concealer or highlighter. Once your foundation is in place, it’ll be clear where you need added coverage and you’ll avoid dry, uneven patches.

Blend: The secret to long-lasting, good-coverage concealer is blending. Start with a minuscule amount, and build it up as you blend. Remember, you’re trying to hide imperfections, not change the colour of your complexion.

Choose wisely: Heavy concealers, even if you want high coverage, aren’t always the best choice. Often, a highlighter or illuminator will do a better job at brightening dark patches or removing red tones from your skin.

Here are 6 tired-and-tested concealers we love.

If you’re after a heavy-duty concealer that’s serious about coverage, Kevyn Aucoin The Sensual Skin Enhancer, $44.90, is your guy. It’s powerful: as in, it would easily cover a tattoo, so eye-bags stand no chance. Double it as a high-coverage foundation by mixing with moisturiser.

There’s a reason this product is a best seller, and has been for years. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat, $63, is so much more than a concealer. The super-moisturising formula works more like a highlighter than a classic concealer, working to hide dark patches and adding a healthy, luminous glow to skin.

Neutralise redness in a flash with the unique yellow-based tones of NARS Concealer, $36. Just like green-toned concealers, yellows are ideal for hiding redness and balancing uneven skin tone. Beautifully blendable and long-wearing, this is a winner of a concealer.

This little compact is everything you need to cover any imperfection. Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit, $54, combines a hydrating corrector to camouflage redness, blemishes and imperfections, and a pressed powder for setting the coverage in place. The results? Super-long-lasting coverage.

Unlike the Studio Concealers in the MAC range, this formula is much more lightweight. But the coverage is still strong. MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, $38, goes on smoothly, and sets with a matte finish, ideal for dark spots or patches of discolouration. You’re left with a smooth, even surface to apply the rest of your make-up.

Physicians Formula Concealer Twin, $19.95, is an excellent and affordable option for warm weather. The water-resistant formula is lightweight but provides solid coverage. Great for oily skin or sweaty weather, or skin prone to redness.
