Trends to try
When it comes to a cool design, nothing beats a professional manicure to kick off your weekend. We chatted with master manicurist Jessica Peris, from Jessica Peris Beautique in Harrison, about the trends to look out for.
“This season, we’ll start to see more understated designs, like simple geometric patterns, reverse French manicures and things like a single brush stroke, line or dot on every nail. Basic designs that are still a little quirky,” says Jessica (check out her instagram for awesome mani inspo!). “Negative space will be a continuing trend, as well as soft and bold pastels.”
Right-now nail colour
We can’t get enough of fresh mint green, cheeky tangerine and classic cherry red for the upcoming warm months. And spring is the ideal time to try something new and fresh – why not give a sky blue hue a go, or lemon yellow?
Our fave nail brand, OPI, recently launched their Retro Summer Collection. With cool colours like I’m Getting a Tan-gerine, Towel Me About It and Sailing & Nail-ing (below), it’s the ultimate in on-trend, vintage-inspired shades.
For something more low-key, try a floral shade from the new Sally Hansen range. You really can’t beat the new Miracle Gel Collection of polishes by Sally Hansen for long-wear, high-shine colour – we love Plush Blush, Prince Char-Mint and Mauve-olous (below) for a more subtle look.
Modernising your manicure doesn’t mean saying goodbye to your favourite nail shape. Whether it’s square, round, oval or an elongated almond you prefer, it’s all good as long as it’s paired with the right shade. Long, more edgy shapes, like the ballerina (you know, the one that looks like a ballerina’s pointe shoe), are better suited to natural tones, whites, pinks and simple geometric designs. Go for a bold look with short, square and round nail shapes.
Jessica agrees: when it comes to shape, she says the classics are back. “For natural nails I feel a classic rounded shape is making a comeback, the more mature shapes tend to work really well in contrast with the more fun and edgy designs.”
