In the interest of full disclosure, we have to admit that here at onthecover, we’re already sold on microdermabrasion. We love it. Like, really love it. The reasons for our addiction are plenty… It’s affordable. It’s fast. No chemicals are put on your skin. It’s not invasive – your delicate facial skin isn’t peeled, sandpapered or melted off (cringe). And most of all, it leaves your skin feeling really, really clean. Soft, fresh and just really clean.

Basically, microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment that uses a vacuum and a crystal or diamond-tipped instrument to suck out pollution from your skin. Sounds painful – it’s not. The micro crystals or diamonds gently polish the skin and stimulate blood flow, which (as we all know) is fantastic for encouraging brighter, younger-looking skin.

Unlike it’s (slightly scary) big sister treatment dermabrasion, which is preformed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, it’s suitable for all skin types. Dermabrasion, which involves an abrasive tool that removes layers of skin, is usually limited to fair-skinned (brave) people.

The beauty blogger world refer to it as the lunch-time peel, and we have to agree. Of course, like most good things in life, it should be consumed in moderation. Generally a monthly treatment is recommended but visit your local spa or skin centre to ask more questions.

We spoke with three local Canberra salons who are passionate about microdermabrasion and it’s results. There’s their advice…

Romina from Le Salon D’Elle at ClubLime in Greenway says…

“Microdermabrasion is one of the easiest and most effective ways to fight the signs of ageing. From minimising fine lines to improving your pores, this treatment provides many benefits. Microdermabrasion sloughs off the dead and dull surface layers of the skin, stimulating an increase in collageon production and rejuvenation. Many clients see dramatic improvements in tone, texture and colour of treated areas after just one treatment. This amazing resurfacing treatment also helps to improve oily or dull skin, enlarged pores, clogged pores, fine lines, mild acne scars, pigmentation and uneven skin texture.”

Barbara from Essence Salon and Spa in Griffith tells us…

“Microdermabrasion is one of our most popular treatments, and has been for many years.  The treatment involves using a machine with a light vacuum suction to draw your skin up to a handpiece, which is encrusted with tiny diamond chips.  The handpiece is moved all around your face and deeply exfoliates your skin. The skin is not broken during the treatment at all, so it doesn’t hurt. At Essence, we follow this with a mask to soothe and hydrate. The end result is clean, smooth skin that feels fantastic. It’s always great to have a deep exfoliating treatment as it stimulates cell renewal, resurfaces your skin, and allows your products to penetrate and work better. Microdermabrasion is suitable for almost all skin types, including darker skins, which are normally at risk with more invasive treatments. A one-off treatment is fabulous for your skin, but three to six treatments will give you an even better result.”

Lauren from H2O Spa at Kingston Foreshore says…

“You can have this treatment all year around but the best results come from getting it done every six weeks. Your skin cells develop every 28 days and this treatment removes the dead skin. If you do the treatment too often you start to strip your natural oil barrier. We don’t recommend it to people with sensitive skin, the machine we use can be adjusted to suit but we only treat areas such as the cheeks or chin with sensitive skin types to clear congestion without harming the skin. After the treatment we restore the skin with a serum and a hydrating mask to boost the healing; always finish with an SPF because you are more likely to burn after treatment because it can cause pigmentation spots.”
