Breakfast with children doesn’t have to be a mad rush. And it doesn’t have to be at McDonalds. Here are 7 places that are just as good for you as they are for the littlies. They won’t frown at the site of a pram or screw up their nose when asking for a highchair. And they won’t charge $3.50 for a babychino (that is an actual story of an actual café in Canberra that actually charges $3.50 for froth and cocoa… Boycott!)

Go on, brave it. Go out for breakfast. You work hard. You deserve it!

Maple + Clove, Barton
This place has it all. Wholesome, clean food, a kids menu, a facing park AND it offers nutritious take-home meals. Have breakfast, and sort out dinner in one move? Hello, winner.

Mocan & Green Grout, New Acton
Two words: Sit. Outside. Big tables, big chairs, quiet area… and the delicious coffee makes it all bearable.

Common Grounds, Gowrie
It’s all about easy, affordable dining at this place. Simple menu, loads of kid-friendly options and two outdoor areas to keep the kids happy.

Double Shot, Deakin
The prize for most-amazing food goes to DS. An outside tables buys you a long, scooter-friendly path, concrete area for chalk drawing and small bushes for exploring. The staff are fantastic and the food couldn’t be more delicious.

Ricardo’s Café, Jamison
With baked goods to rival any pâtisserie, this place isn’t for anyone afraid of sugar. Check your detox at the door and dive into the goodness. For an hour, anyway. A big playground is within eyeshot of the café, using it for bribery is recommended.

Rodney’s Garden Café, at Rodney’s Nursery, Pialligo
Probably the best combo of good food, easy entertainment and sympathetic staff. If the weather’s good, the playground is easy amusement for the kids and is within eyeshot of most of the tables. The vintage rocking horse (that works!) and endless rows of flowers and hidden animals (hide and seek, anyone?) and you’re set for at least an hour-long breakfast.

A Bite to Eat, Chifley
An oldie, but a goodie. It’s been around for ages but it stays around because of the eclectic menu and retro, easy-going atmosphere. PLUS across the street is a huge oval and fantastic park. Sold.
